General
information
Trafficking in human beings is a global problem and
an integral part of international migration. There
is a demand for advanced and growing economies for
cheap labour. Due to poverty and restructuring economies,
to unequal gender division of labour, it is difficult
for women and girls to find employment in their national
countries or abroad. Work available for women is either
in informal or service sector. Such work is often
accompanied by exploitation and violence because it
is informal and unmonitored, contributing to international
trafficking in women and children. An increasing proportion
of the victims of this trade are women and girls and
boys from this region. At the same time countries
from Central and Eastern Europe have become not only
sending countries but also transit and receiving countries
for women who are trafficked from countries further
East, such as those of former Soviet Union. The phenomenon
is much larger than the data in the statistics, because
women in this region are even more reluctant than
in the West to report this crime, afraid of being
considered criminals and not victims. The Stability
Pact Eastern Europe-task force on trafficking in human
beings gathered different actors of the society to
fight against trafficking. National plans of Action
to prevent and combat trafficking and assist victims
are established in the countries of the region.
