In Romania, in the last years, there have been adopted two laws regarding domestic violence: Law 197/2000 and Law 217/2003, both of them expressing the concern of the governmental institutions and the NGO's about the increasing number of domestic offences and the phenomenon trends. With Law 197/2000, domestic violence has been introduced as a crime in the Penal Code. Law 217/2003 set up the National Agency for Family Protection, within the Ministry of Labour, Social Solidarity and Family and also (for the first time in Romanian legislation) Centers for victim's assistance and protection(where the victims can find shelter, medical assistance, psychological care and judicial support) and Centers for counselling the offenders. The law introduce a new category of social workers, acting as specialized personnel in victim's assistance. The law introduced new provisions regarding the mediation in domestic violence conflicts, using the family council or specialized mediators.
